How to Upgrade to Headway Themes 3.0

(This post does not describe how to from 2.0x to 3.0x. I will wait until the official path is released to address that process.)

Upgrading to the latest version of 3.0 is a fairly simple process. If you have two minutes, check out the video:

How to Upgrade from Headway 3.0.4 to Headway 3.0.5

If you’re far too busy to check out the quick video, just follow these steps:

  1. (recommended) Backup your Headway Themes site. If you don’t have back-up buddy, use the free duplicator plugin.
  2. Login to your WordPress administrative dashboard.
  3. Click “updates” under the dashboard menu, or click the “update now” link if you see the yellow alert message.
  4. Select Headway Themes from the list of available upgrades.
  5. Click “Upgrade Themes.”

Wait for the upgrade to finish and you’re done! The best part? Headway is still in the same folder, so child themes targeted to the “headway” will still work and there aren’t any residual “3.0.3…3.0.4…” installations left over.

    Hi Corey,

I know I can’t upgrade from the latest version of 2.0.13 to 3.0, but would it work to use the duplicator plugin to copy my 2.0.13 site to a test site that has 3.0.5 version on it? Would all my 2.0 content show up in the WordPress dashboard and then would I be able to re-design my entire site on 3.0.5? Unfortunately, I might not be able to wait for an upgrade path and I am looking for the easiest way to re-build without having to re-write everything. I don’t know what would take longer, waiting for an upgrade path or trying to figure 3.0.5 out on my own? My site is not that large, and I don’t thing that complicated. Although I enjoyed learning to build my site and love Headway, it took me a while to figure 2.0 out and I’m worried about my current time constraints. Thanks for your site, I visit it often and its been very helpful.

    • I’m not sure what you mean when you say “2.0″ content. Basically right now if you installed 3.0.5 on your current site, nothing would be carried over. Your posts and pages and comments will all be fine, but anything in easy hooks would have to be added either utilizing custom code blocks or regular hooks. SEO options would need to be re-created, and no leaf settings would be used at all.

Right now it’s like moving houses. You’ve got a new set of rooms to work with and have to move all of your stuff or hire someone to do that for you if you don’t like moving things.

If you find yourself having trouble with 3.0.5 be sure to download the user guide I’ve written. It goes through every available option and explains what it does and how to use it –> http://headway101.com

Thanks for your reply, would it be ok then to use the duplicator plugin to copy my existing site which is in 2.0.3 to a test site with 3.0.5 on it so I could work on the redesign while my 2.0.3 site remains live?
